Whiteside Gill, Easington, Co. Durham
Length approx. 100 metres
2001

Whiteside Gill is located on the east Durham coastline near Easington. The project was set up as part of the ‘Turning the Tide’ regeneration scheme, which has over the last four years focused on cleaning up the beaches after the closure of the collieries. I was invited to collaborate with artist Julia Barton to improve a degraded and featureless Gill approximately 100m long, which runs west to east from the cliffs to the beach. Our design was inspired by the surrounding environment, and connects, extends and develops an existing footpath and water flume into an extensive and intriguing land artwork. It has played a significant part in enabling local flora to reintegrate into the site, and extensively contributed to available habitat.
