Elm with hidden steel and concrete fixings
Commissioned by Darlington Borough Council
North bank of the River Tees at Low Conniscliffe, Darlington
Spans approximately 11metres
2000
The motivation in making this work was to create a window onto
the moving surface of the river, and focus the evocative nature
of being close to the water. It lies between the footpath and
river on the north bank, and creates an entrance onto the river
by inviting people to turn from the main footpath into its narrow
centre, and then opens out onto the water. To the left is integrated
a long curved seat that follows the winding contour of the sculpture,
from which a clear view of the river can be seen through an
opening in the dense canopy.
