Elm with hidden steel and concrete fixings
Commissioned by Sedgefield District Council
Sited at Swan Pool, Bishop Middleham, Co. Durham
Length 5 metres
1997
This work is about the magnetic fascination of the water’s
edge. A sharply defined half cone of timber stretches up from
a bank, with its mouth open to the water. Close inspection reveals
a wooden jetty that fans out from the bank, making it possible
to step out over the water and into the mouth of the cone. Deep
inside, the cone is sealed by a wooden wall on which is set
a long seat. From here the bank is lost to view, and sound from
behind is muffled. To all intents and purposes the viewer could
be afloat.
